Why We Built Suites With Three Bedrooms and a Full Kitchen — And Why Almost No One Else in Belize City Has

If you've ever searched for a hotel with a full kitchen in Belize City, you've probably realized fairly quickly that the options are limited.

Find one with enough bedrooms for an entire family or group, and the list gets even shorter.

That was one of the gaps we kept coming back to when we were designing Waterways.

Waterways is a boutique hotel in Bella Vista, Belize City, designed for families, groups and longer stays, with spacious multi-bedroom suites that combine residential-style living with hotel service.

Belize has changed as a destination. People aren't necessarily arriving as couples, spending one night in the city and moving on. They're traveling with children. Bringing their parents. Meeting friends. Staying longer. Combining work with vacation. Spending a few days in Belize City before heading elsewhere, or using the city as a base while they explore.

But the accommodations haven't always changed with them.

So we decided ours would.

Waterways has nine canal-facing suites spread across three floors, including three-bedroom suites with full kitchens in Belize City. It's the largest full-kitchen suite layout in Belize City, designed for the kind of trip where everyone wants to stay together without actually having to be together every minute of the day.

And when we say full kitchen, we mean a kitchen.

Not a microwave tucked above a mini-fridge.

A real kitchen where someone can make breakfast before everyone wakes up, keep snacks and groceries for the kids, bring leftovers home after dinner, or cook an actual meal when going out for the third night in a row suddenly doesn't sound appealing.

That becomes especially important when you're staying for more than a couple of nights.

Because Six People Don't Need Six Different Vacations

There is a particular kind of logistics that comes with traveling as a family or group.

Someone wakes up at 6:00 a.m.

Someone else sleeps until 10:00.

The kids want breakfast immediately.

Someone needs to answer a work email.

Someone wants an hour alone.

And somehow everyone is supposed to do all of that from two beds and a hotel bathroom.

The usual solution is to book several rooms, hopefully on the same floor and, if you're lucky, close enough that no one spends the week walking back and forth down a hallway.

We thought there should be a better option.

For families or groups looking for accommodations in Belize City, a three-bedroom suite offers another way to stay together without booking several separate hotel rooms.

A three-bedroom suite lets the trip stay communal without making it crowded.

You still have a living space where everyone can gather at the end of the day. You can sit together over breakfast, talk about where you're going next, or come back from a full day out and actually have somewhere to spend time together.

But when someone wants to close a bedroom door, they can.

That separation sounds like a small thing until six people have been traveling together for five days.

The Part a Vacation Rental Can't Always Give You

Of course, travelers looking for more space have had another option for years: rent an apartment or a house.

And there are plenty of trips where that makes sense.

But more space can sometimes mean taking on more responsibility too.

You're figuring out transportation. You're organizing tours. You're searching for recommendations. You're coordinating arrival times. You're messaging different people when you need something.

We wanted the space without asking guests to manage the trip themselves.

So the suites at Waterways are surrounded by the things that make staying at a hotel easier: 24-hour concierge service, housekeeping, a resort-style pool, a gym, in-room spa services and assistance arranging tours and experiences throughout Belize.

If you've spent the entire day out exploring Belize, you can come back, close the door and simply be done for the day.

That's the balance we were looking for.

Built for More Than Sleeping

One of the things we've learned from operating hotels is that the longer someone stays, the less a room can function as simply a place to sleep.

On a one-night stay, a bed and a bathroom might be enough.

On day six, you notice everything else.

You notice whether there's somewhere comfortable to sit.

Whether you can unpack properly.

Whether the family has space to spread out.

Whether you can make coffee without leaving the room.

Whether everyone has to get dressed and go somewhere every time somebody gets hungry.

That's why the three-bedroom suite isn't simply about adding more beds.

It's about making the space work differently.

Waterways was designed for guests who might actually live in their suite for a little while, whether that's a family spending a week in Belize, two families traveling together, a group of friends planning days on the Belize Barrier Reef, or relatives meeting in Belize City for a celebration.

The goal isn't to fit more people into a hotel room.

It's to give more people enough room to enjoy traveling together.

Waterways' three-bedroom suites were built, in part, to make those questions unnecessary.

Everyone is part of the same trip without everyone having to share the same room.

And for us, that's really the point.

We didn't build three-bedroom suites because we wanted to say we had bigger rooms.

We built them because the way people travel has changed, and we think the places they stay should change with them.
